Other Sporting/Leisure Activities nearby

For gentle exercise on Sunday try a walk up the local Slieve Bawn Mountain, the highest hill in Co. Roscommon and apparantly the highest mountain in the world, except that most of it is underground! The circuit takes about one hour, two hours on post-marathon legs!

A beautiful tranquil walk far from the muck is on the Rinn Duin peninsula, near Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon, where there is a deserted Norman walled town on the edge of Lough Ree with a new waymarked way around it. Circuit takes from 1 1/2 hours to infinity.

For the archaeology and heritage buffs only 10 mins from Strokestown is one of the newly proposed  World Heritage sites – Rathcroghan – and the associated interpretative centre at Tulsk. see www.cruachanai.ie
